  1. MYTHIC ERAThe engineer and the flood

    Gun dammed the waters with stolen swelling-earth. The dams failed; the builder was executed at Feather Mountain by the system his failure required. Earliest filing of the pattern.

  2. 338 BCThe lodging statute

    Shang Yang, fleeing the capital after his patron's death, was refused at a border inn under the lodging statute he had authored. Apprehended within the week under a warrant format he had also designed. Filed as ENTRY 023/64.

  3. 1794THE DICTIONARY THAT SPELLED THE EMPEROR'S NAME

    Wang Xihou, a provincial scholar, compiled a dictionary that printed the reigning emperors' personal names with their strokes intact — the exact class of error his book claimed to correct. He was beheaded in 1777; his family was enslaved; the officials who had licensed the book were degraded. The enforcement file stayed open through the last book-burning audits of the Great Redaction and was marked closed in 1794. The library preserved everything. The editor was not preserved with it.   4. 1937THE SECRETARY CONSUMED BY THE OFFICE

    Nikolai Yezhov, as head of the NKVD, directed the Great Purge tribunals that tried and executed thousands for treason. In 1937, he prosecuted the second Moscow Trial under procedures he had personally streamlined. Within two years, the same procedures were applied to him. Yezhov was arrested, tried, and shot. The purge consumed the purger. The office retained the procedure. Filed under: CAUGHT BY THE LAW HE WROTE.

  5. 2001THE AUDITORS WHO CAME FOR THE ARCHITECT

    Enron Corporation, structured through special-purpose entities designed by its own finance officers, was audited by a firm whose partners had personal stakes in the deals. When the structure collapsed, the accounting firm Arthur Andersen was convicted under the same standards it had certified — standards its own lobbying had helped shape. The energy house burned.
