    Zhao Gao's deer — evidence bent until a court agreed to miscount (Qin, 207 BC). Filed under the pattern's later run.

  2. MALING CAMPAIGN, 341 BCThe Reduced Stoves

    Qi's army entered Wei with one hundred thousand cooking stoves. By the third camp, only thirty thousand remained. Pursuing commander Pang Juan read cowardice and force-marched his vanguard to Maling. Filed as ENTRY 008/64.

  3. 1944THE ARMY THAT WAS NOT THERE

    Operation Fortitude assembled a phantom army in southeast England: inflatable tanks, dummy landing craft, simulated radio traffic at corps strength. German reconnaissance counted the stoves and held the Panzer reserve at Calais. The real stoves were on the Normandy coast, counting down to dawn.

  4. 1991THE COUP THAT RODE INTO THE DEFILE

    The Soviet Union's deployments had been drawn down for two seasons — fleet movements reduced, exercises cancelled. The State Committee for the Emergency read the reduction as weakness and rode into Moscow to depose Gorbachev. The White House was surrounded by dawn by forces acting under Yeltsin, whom the Committee had tried to arrest.
