Archduke Franz Ferdinand's motorcade route through Sarajevo was published in the newspaper. The escort had rehearsed every scenario — but not the driver's unfamiliarity with the revised route. The lead car hesitated at a corner. Gavrilo Princip, who had timed his position to the published itinerary, stepped forward and fired.
