    Following the mirror finding (see entry 012), King Wei posted rewards for criticism in three grades: to the face, in writing, in the marketplace. Months one to three: the palace gate thronged like a market. Filed as ENTRY 022/64.

  3. 1965THE CRITIQUE THAT THRONGED THE GATE THEN EMPTIED IT

    Yao Wenyuan published a critique of Wu Han's play Hai Rui Dismissed from Office in November 1965. Every provincial newspaper reprinted it within a month. The gate that had welcomed honest criticism now processed only denunciations. By year's end, the market was open but had no wares.
