    The Soviet Union transported nuclear missiles across the Atlantic to Cuba, aimed at the United States. The US Navy placed a quarantine around the island. Resolution came by going around the map: a trade of missiles in Cuba for missiles in Turkey.

    The United States and China imposed tariffs on each other's goods. A supply chain that had run directly between Shanghai and Los Angeles was rerouted through Ho Chi Minh City and Mexico City. The goods arrived at the same docks. The journey had doubled in length.
