Stalin was told by his interior ministry, his secretariat, and his military intelligence that the party was unified, the army loyal, the opposition broken. All three screened the mirrors. The only honest assessment reached the Kremlin from Trotsky, writing in exile in Mexico City under armed guard.
- 1984THE YEAR THAT WAS ALSO A NOVEL
Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four proposed a year in which the state would review all statements through a Ministry of Truth. When the calendar reached 1984, every government department and intelligence agency found itself measured against the fiction. The mirror clause was the date on the calendar.
